March 2025 // Client Work
For a class project, we were approached by our theater department to create a poster for their spring production of Hamlet. The assignment involved collaborating with the client to understand their vision and requirements. We delved into the play as a class to ensure a comprehensive understanding, followed by a meeting with the client to discuss thematic and graphical preferences.
The client provided a list of essential text elements to include on the poster, specifying their placement. They expressed a desire for a dark-toned style, with references to dark academia and the Victorian language of flowers. Additionally, they requested the inclusion of a skull motif and suggested incorporating costume details into the design. For instance, Hamlet's costume featured black attire with embroidered roses on his wrists, while Ophelia wore white and had a very floral design, along with more vibrant colors compared to the rest of the cast.
Initially, I envisioned a single poster design. However, as I conceptualized the project, I realized that the narrative and visual elements would be more effectively conveyed through two contrasting posters that, when placed together, formed a cohesive image: a skull. This approach allowed me to explore duality and contrast, central themes in Hamlet, while adhering to the client's specifications.

The "Dark Hamlet" poster features a monochromatic color scheme with gothic elements, reflecting Hamlet's internal turmoil and the play's somber themes. In contrast, the "Light Hamlet" poster utilizes a lighter palette with floral motifs, symbolizing Ophelia's innocence and the fleeting beauty of life. Together, these posters encapsulate the essence of the characters and the narrative's dualities.
We were also asked to create the program for the play. My variation of that can be found here. (Note: Not all of the headshots were provided by client.)
This project not only allowed me to apply and refine my graphic design skills, but it also challenged me to think critically about visual storytelling and thematic representation. It was a rewarding experience that enhanced my ability to convey complex narratives through design.
